Donge La Mombasa Essay Competition’:
In honour of Mombasa -
Deadline for submission is now 8th July 2015.
Donge is inviting everyone to share their hopes and concerns for the future of Mombasa, thereby generating diverse perspectives and an important dialogue on all aspects that affect this city.
This essay competition gives writers from diverse backgrounds a platform to express their views about Mombasa and their visions of the future of the city. Participants will be required to demonstrate the ability to stimulate and provoke discussions about any important issues affecting Mombasa. These issues may include, but are not limited to, development, gender inequality, politics, religion, racism, relationships, child labour, child abuse, unemployment, tourism, and security. The winner gets 8000/- and a two-night stay for two at the luxurious Kenya Bay Beach Hotel.
Eligibility Requirements and rules
All members of the public can enter the competition
Entrants who are not already registered Donge members are advised be register via Donge's website
Entrants must submit their names in advance by sending and email to stating their full names, contact details and facebook name, before 15th June 2015.
Essays can ONLY be submitted electronically by emailing it to before 1st July 2015.
The essay should be written in English or Swahili and be not MORE than 1000 words long, excluding references. You must provide a word count on the entry form which will be emailed to all
It should be word-processed preferably using Microsoft Word, using double line spacing, with each page numbered, and with the essay title on the top of each page.
The writer's name and any details that can identify who the writer is should NOT be on the essay cover page or anywhere in the essay. This means that the essays can be judged anonymously. Of course, the writers name and contacts should be provided on the entry email.
References - books, articles or online sources that are cited should be listed at the end of the essay. Mark the place in the text by a superscript number that refers to the reference list. For example, In the text....Rosalind Franklin’s work was very important10.... In the reference list, in numerical order...

Quotations should also be acknowledged in the references.
The essay should be an original piece of work. It should be written in the entrants’s own words and not copied from any books, articles, or from the internet.
Only one entry per person
Essay entries cannot have already been published.
Voting for the best three entries, will take place on
11th July 15 on Donge FB platform where members will get a chance to vote.
The best 3 entries will then be submitted to 3 independent judges who will each give scores.
Organisors will choose these 3 judges from the educational and business community as well as the volunteer community at large to score the essays using the following criteria with a 1 to 10 point score per category (20 is the highest per category with a total possible score of 100):
Writing: uses correct grammar, punctuation, spelling & concise language.
Originality: displays originality of thought and content.
Organization: follows a logical and easily understood progression.
Appropriateness to the theme: clearly reflects the theme of the competition.
Creativity: uses a creative angle on the theme.
The winning essay writer will receive a 8000 Kenya Shillings and a two-night stay for two at the luxurious Kenya Bay Beach Hotel. The 2nd Place will win 5000/- & the 3rd place wins 3000/-
The winner will be contacted by DiplomaSender in order to confirm the address to be used when delivering the prize.
Winners will be featured on the Donge's Facebook platform and on home page of the Donge web site.
The winner will be announced on the 17th of July 2015 (Eid-Day)
Each essay must reflect the contestant's own research, writing and original thinking.
Only one (1) essay may be submitted by each contestant.
Essays must be typed and submitted in electronic format using either a standard text file such as Notepad, Microsoft Word, Google Docs or Adobe PDF files.
Organisors will attempt to open other document types but will not be required to accept any document that does not open with any of the above software.
The essay text must be between 750 and 1,000 words. The title page and bibliography (if applicable) are not included.

Entries will be time-stamped when submitted..
Each essay must include a title page with the essay title and author’s name.
Essays will not be returned to the author; they become property of Donge and we may reprint the essays in relevant publications or marketing material. Appropriate citations will be given to the writers.
Entrant warrants that his or her entry (1) is original and does not infringe the intellectual-property rights of any third party, (2) has not been published in any medium, and (3) has not won an award
Donge is not responsible for lost, late, illegible, or incomplete entries; postage-due mail; or entries not received for any reason.

Conditions of participation: No transfer, assignment, or substitution of a prize permitted, except Donge reserves the right to substitute prize (or prize component) for an item of equal or greater value at Donge’s sole discretion.
Nothing in these official contest rules shall obligate Donge to publish or otherwise use any entry submitted in connection with this Contest.
Entrants agree to be bound by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of Donge, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Contest.
By entering, Entrant represents that any essay, etc., and other materials submitted as part of Entrant’s contest entry are original and will not constitute defamation or an invasion of privacy or otherwise infringe upon the rights of any third party, and that the Entrant owns or has the rights to convey any and all right and title in such essay. In addition, by entering, Entrant grants to Donge a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to edit, publish, promote, and republish at any time in the future and otherwise use Entrant’s submitted essay, along with Entrant’s name, likeness, biographical information, and any other information provided by Entrant, in any and all media for possible editorial, promotional, or advertising purposes, without further permission, notice, or compensation (except where prohibited by law).
(a) entry does not defame or invade the privacy of any party; (b) entry does not infringe upon the rights of any third party; and (c) the essay and other materials submitted are original and have never been published and entry has never won an award. Failure to comply with this deadline may result in forfeiture of the prize and selection of an alternate winner. Return of any prize/prize notification as undeliverable may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Acceptance of the prize constitutes permission for Donge and its agencies to use Winner’s name and/or likeness, biographical information, essay, and other materials submitted for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law. By entering and/or accepting prize, Entrants and Winners agree to hold and assign Donge and its promotional partners, directors, officers, and employees harmless for liability, damages, or claims for injury or loss to any person or property, relating to, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, participation in this Contest, the acceptance and/or subsequent use or misuse or condition of any of the prizes awarded, or claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy. False or deceptive entries or acts will render the Entrant ineligible. Donge, in its sole discretion, reserves the immediate and unrestricted right to disqualify any entrant or prize winner, if either commits or has committed any act or has been involved or becomes involved in any situation or occurrence which the Donge deems likely to subject Donge, Entrant, or Winner to ridicule, scandal, or contempt or which reflects unfavorably upon the Donge in any way. If such information is discovered by Donge after a winner has received notice of his/her prize and before the prize is awarded, Donge may rescind the prize in its entirety. If a portion of his/her prize has already been awarded, Donge may withdraw the remainder of the prize that has been fulfilled. Decisions of the Donge are final and binding in all matters related to this paragraph. Internet: Donge is not responsible for lost or late entries nor for electronic-transmission errors resulting in omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operations or transmission, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to or alterations of entry materials, or for technical, network, telephone-equipment, electronic, computer, hardware, or software malfunctions or limitations of any kind, or inaccurate transmissions of or failure to receive entry information by Donge or presenter on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website or any combination thereof. If for any reason the Internet portion of the program is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, the Donge reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process and to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest. Donge reserves the right to select winners from eligible entries received as of the termination date. CAUTION: Any attempt by a contestant to deliberately damage any website or undermine the legitimate operation of the game is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, Donge reserves the right to seek damages from any such contestant to the fullest extent of the law. If there is a dispute as to the identity of the Entrant, the prize will be awarded to the authorized account holder of the e-mail address.
